The preparation meeting

The outline of the Platinum Jubilee was discussed.

An important meeting was held on the preparations for the Platinum Jubilee of Sahibganj College. It was chaired by Principal Dr. Ranjit Kumar Singh. The college is preparing a grand celebration with the participation of its former students.

Sahibganj. On Wednesday, a meeting was held in the college conference hall on the preparations for the Platinum Jubilee that will mark seventy-five years since the college was founded. Heads of departments and teachers took part. They discussed the outline of the celebration, the forming of an organising committee, cultural and academic programmes, and the arrangements needed to run the event well.

Dr. Anil Kumar, head of Chemistry, spoke on the purpose and importance of the jubilee. He said this special celebration marks seventy-five years of the college, and that former students will have a prominent part in it. The teachers present then offered their own suggestions for making the celebration memorable and successful.

In his address from the chair, Principal Dr. Ranjit Kumar Singh said it is a matter of pride that Sahibganj College is completing seventy-five years. To be among the few institutions in Jharkhand and the neighbouring states that have completed seventy-five years is, he said, a historic achievement for the college. The Platinum Jubilee, he said, is a chance to remember the college’s academic journey, its achievements and its contribution, and also to set the direction of its future.

He said Sahibganj College was founded on 28 October 1951. At first it was part of Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University. After Sido Kanhu Murmu University, Dumka, was established in 1992, the college became a constituent unit of that university.

The Principal said a separate meeting with former students will be held in the coming days, to discuss the celebration, so that with their help the Platinum Jubilee can be made grand and memorable.

Dr. Santosh Kumar Choudhary, assistant professor of English, suggested activities for the celebration. Dr. Dinesh Kumar Yadav, coordinator of the organising committee, set out the likely budget and the estimated cost.

Also present were Dr. S. R. I. Rizvi, head of Geology; Dr. Dhruv Jyoti Kumar Singh, head of Maithili; Dr. Pramod Kumar, head of Philosophy; Dr. Shivanand Awasthi, head of History; Dr. Rajiv Kumar, head of Political Science; Dr. Sonu Kumar Sahu, head of Hindi; Dr. Jisu Hasda, head of Santali; Prof. Mariam Hembrom, head of English; and assistant professors Dr. Dharmendra Yadav, Dr. Rupa Das, Prof. Komal Kumari and Prof. Nitin Kumar, with other teachers.

Everyone present stressed a shared effort, closer coordination, and the active part of former students in making the Platinum Jubilee a success.

The lecture series

Language is a person’s first identity, Dr. Pramod Kumar said.

On the third day of the Platinum Jubilee lecture series of Sahibganj College, the former head of English gave the lecture.

Sahibganj. On the third day of the lecture series held to mark seventy-five years of the college, Dr. Pramod Kumar, former head of the English department, spoke in Nandan Bhavan. He addressed the students on the importance of language.

He said English is known not only as an international language, but as one of the most widely used languages in the world. Every student, he said, should use a rich and effective language in speech, writing and discussion, because language is a person’s first identity.

At the start, Principal Dr. Ranjit Kumar Singh welcomed Dr. Pramod Kumar in the traditional way, with a shawl and a plant. He thanked him for coming to the lecture series and for guiding the students.

The Principal told the students why the Platinum Jubilee matters, and what it can mean in the years ahead. He asked them to take an active part in the programme and to offer their own suggestions.

Also present were Prof. Mariam Hembrom, head of English; assistant professors Dr. Semi Victor Marandi, Dr. Santosh Kumar Choudhary and Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh; heads and teachers of other departments; and a large number of students.

Simon Hembrom, a student of PG semester 4, conducted the stage. During the lecture, students heard about the importance of language, its effective use, and the part it plays in shaping a person.
